Madar (Tripoli) - Libya's Public Prosecution announced on Thursday, October 22, 2026, the pre-trial detention of the chairman of the board of the General Company for Water and Wastewater, its contracts management official and the members of its supplies acceptance committee, over irregularities in four contracts to supply water pipes to municipalities, the Libyan News Agency (LANA) reported on Friday.

The prosecution said the investigation covered the findings of an Audit Bureau inspection of four contracts the company had signed with a supplier, worth a total of 16.639 million Libyan dinars.

According to the prosecution, the inspection found breaches of the rules for awarding supply contracts and that company officials had accepted materials that did not match the contract specifications, including pipes made of rust-prone material although stainless steel was required, as well as violations of country-of-origin specifications.

Investigators also found that a payment of 4.459 million dinars had been approved under one of the contracts, although the non-compliant materials supplied under it were worth no more than 1.7 million dinars, the prosecution added.

LANA's headline referred to ten people being detained. The prosecution did not disclose their names, the supplier or the municipalities concerned.
