Madar (Benghazi) - The UN Secretary-General's Special Representative and head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Hanna Tetteh, on Friday, November 6, 2026, ended a two-day visit to Benghazi during which she met political, military and academic figures in eastern Libya, the Libyan news agency LANA reported.

She began on Thursday with Lieutenant General Saddam Haftar, deputy commander-in-chief of the Libyan army, in talks focused on progress within the "mini-meeting" framework and the steps needed to implement the October 30 agreement, according to the UN mission.

Tetteh praised the Libyan National Army's constructive participation in the talks and reaffirmed the mission's support for an inclusive political process, unified state institutions, economic governance and national elections. Saddam Haftar welcomed the recent Security Council decision renewing the mission's mandate.

The envoy also held her first meeting with the recently elected Speaker of the House of Representatives, congratulating him and expressing readiness to work closely with parliament and all Libyan institutions to hold elections. She stressed the need to build on the ongoing dialogue to bring positions closer and carry out key reforms.

The Speaker reiterated parliament's support for the mini-meeting agreement and called on the international community to take a firm stance against those obstructing the political process.

On the sidelines of the visit, Tetteh laid a wreath at the tomb of Omar al-Mukhtar.
