Khaled Haftar, chief of staff of the forces under the General Command in eastern Libya and son of retired general Khalifa Haftar, has begun an official visit to Morocco at the head of a military delegation. The visit is due to continue until October 15.
He was received in Rabat by Major General Mourad Mounir, deputy inspector-general of the Royal Armed Forces, before holding talks with their inspector-general, Lieutenant General Mohamed Berrid. Discussions focused on strengthening military and security cooperation between the two sides.
The visit follows a meeting between Haftar and Berrid in the Angolan capital, Luanda, about three months ago on military cooperation and coordination over regional challenges. Libya remains politically and militarily divided between its eastern and western regions.
Morocco has previously hosted rounds of dialogue between Libyan parties aimed at bringing their positions closer on unifying constitutional institutions and preparing for elections. Those efforts have not ended the political division, with rival governments still operating in the east and west of the country.
