Madar (Tripoli) - The head of Libya's Government of National Unity (GNU), Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, said on Saturday, October 24, 2026, that his government was keen to take into account Egypt's concerns, including those related to maritime borders and economic waters in the Mediterranean, and to address them through dialogue and joint coordination, the Libyan News Agency (LANA) reported.
He made the remarks during a phone call with the head of Egypt's General Intelligence Service, Maj. Gen. Hassan Rashad, in which the two discussed bilateral relations and coordination on issues of mutual interest, according to the GNU head's media office.
Dbeibah said the concerns should be addressed in a way that safeguards "the legitimate maritime rights and interests of the two brotherly countries", while Rashad stressed the depth of relations between the two countries and the importance of continued contact and coordination.
The call came after Libya's House of Representatives last Tuesday unanimously ratified the 2019 memorandum of understanding between the former Government of National Accord and Turkey on the delimitation of maritime jurisdiction areas in the Mediterranean, according to the Libya Observer.
A day later, Egypt's Foreign Ministry declared the memorandum "null and void", and Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty reiterated Cairo's rejection on Friday during a meeting with his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan.
