Madar (Algiers) - Mohamed Ali Haroun, a veteran of Algeria's war of independence and a former member of the country's High Council of State, died on Saturday, October 24, 2026, aged 99, the official APS news agency announced.
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune offered his "sincere condolences" to the family, APS said, also reporting condolences from Council of the Nation President Azouz Nasri and from the president of the Constitutional Court. Veterans Minister Abdelmalek Tachrift also sent his condolences to the family and to his comrades.
According to biographies published by the daily Echorouk and the Ultra Algeria website, Haroun joined the National Liberation Front (FLN) at the start of the independence war and helped organise its activity outside Algeria, heading the political and information side of the federal committee of the FLN's France Federation.
He also took part, according to these sources, in diplomatic efforts to internationalise the Algerian cause and in defending Algerian detainees and activists before French courts during the colonial period.
After independence, he was elected to the first Constituent Assembly, was appointed minister-delegate for human rights in 1991 and then served on the High Council of State from 1992 to 1994.
Official sources did not say when or where the funeral would take place.
