Madar (International) - French President Emmanuel Macron has rejected the resignation offered on Sunday by Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, stressing the importance of continuity in the leadership of the security services while acknowledging shortcomings in advance preparation and intelligence gathering, the Élysée Palace said.

Macron asked the minister to set out the failures transparently and to develop new field arrangements to deal with vandalism, looting and barricades, after violence at Saturday's protests against the rising cost of living.

The clashes led to the arrest of about 2,400 people and left nearly 1,000 members of the security forces injured, according to the authorities.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu is meanwhile convening a crisis cell on Monday to examine the economic and security consequences of the events and to follow up on the related judicial proceedings.
