France's Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs condemned Burkina Faso's decision to end diplomatic relations between the two countries, describing it as hostile and unfounded. In a statement dated 26 June, the ministry said it was examining reciprocal measures in response as it assessed the situation.
The ministry said the decision had been taken unilaterally and, in its assessment, lacked justification. It expressed concern about the direction taken by Burkina Faso's authorities amid the deterioration in relations between the two countries.
Paris also reaffirmed its solidarity with the Burkinabe people. It said it was paying particular attention to the security of French state personnel and French nationals in Burkina Faso, and called on its citizens there to exercise heightened vigilance.
