Madar (International) - The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for an attack last Tuesday on a military base in Borno state, north-eastern Nigeria, saying it killed 21 soldiers.
Accounts of the toll differ: residents spoke of at least 10 soldiers killed and 20 wounded, while a military official said 15 soldiers and five members of the civilian support force were killed.
According to the same source, the attackers destroyed the base, forcing troops to withdraw towards the town of Monguno.
Borno state has faced an armed insurgency for more than 17 years, led by Boko Haram and the West African branch of the Islamic State, which has killed thousands and displaced millions.
