Madar (International) - More than 400 irregular migrants arrived on the Spanish island of El Hierro on Thursday aboard four boats that had left the coasts of Mauritania, Senegal and Gambia, the Spanish news agency EFE reported.
Citing rescue sources, the agency said three of the boats carried 285 people, while the fourth carried between 130 and 150 migrants.
According to EFE, 33 Senegalese migrants, including 14 minors, said they had left Nouadhibou four days before reaching the Canary Islands. The agency added that one boat left Gambia with 190 migrants on board, and another left Saint-Louis in Senegal carrying 62 people.
The crossings come as arrivals continue on the Atlantic route to the Canary Islands from the coasts of West Africa, despite the dangers of the long sea journey.
