Madar (International) - South African club Mamelodi Sundowns, the defending champions, have been knocked out of the 2026-27 CAF Champions League after a 1-1 draw with Angola's Wiliete SC on Friday, 23 October 2026 at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria in the second leg of the second preliminary round, the Senegalese news agency APS reported.
Held 0-0 in the first leg in Angola, Miguel Cardoso's side needed a home win. Tashreeq Matthews put Sundowns ahead in the 11th minute, before Angolan striker Mabululu equalised early in the second half.
With the tie level at 1-1 on aggregate, Wiliete reached the group stage on the away-goals rule, while Sundowns went out in the second preliminary round.
According to South Africa's TimesLIVE, Sundowns had reached the group stage every year since 2016, when they won the title, and last failed to do so in 2015 against TP Mazembe. Orlando Pirates are now South Africa's only representatives in the competition this season.
In the same round, Mauritania's FC Nouadhibou host Ivorian side FC San-Pedro on Sunday, 25 October in Mauritania, after losing the first leg 2-1 in Cote d'Ivoire on 17 October.
